Cenovus Cares: Making a difference, together

Whether collecting items and supplies, contributing monetary donations or volunteering their time, the legal team at Cenovus Energy are superstar volunteers who love to make a difference in the community.

“These volunteer opportunities are a ‘2 for 1’ – so while we are making a positive impact in the community, it is also a chance for team building and a time to connect,” says Colleen Ollen, Senior Legal Assistant at Cenovus. “Every volunteer event we participate in has been rewarding, and we always have a lot of fun together!”

Over the years, the team has volunteered at many different organizations, and have a goal to organize two to four activities each year. Even the pandemic didn’t stop them!

In 2021, the team raised donations and purchased over 1,500 water bottles for the Street Sisters Society, a non-profit community-based outreach organization that provides basic needs for vulnerable women and those experiencing homelessness in Calgary, AB. After this volunteer activity, the team became even more passionate about the cause and did another drive to purchase additional water bottles and items of need in the summer of 2022.

Other Cenovus legal team volunteer activities have included donating gift cards and snacks to the Peter Lougheed Centre’s Intensive Care Unit, hosting collection challenges with peers for the Calgary Food Bank and adopting a family over the holidays – just to name a few.

To wrap up the year, the legal team recently gathered to purchase items on a Christmas wish list for two seniors from the Senior Secret Services, a charity working to bring cheer to isolated seniors in our community, and have donated an additional 20 gifts to seniors living in isolation in Calgary and area.

“We have a few key members on our team who keep an ear to the ground for what is happening in the community, so we have an idea of when and where either volunteering or donation is urgently needed,” shares Colleen.

Through Cenovus Cares, our Employee Giving and Volunteering Program, the team has tracked over 50 volunteer hours this year, generating $3,000 in team volunteer grants for the organizations they volunteer with, and have fundraised an additional $3,000 for in-kind donations.

"I have received help numerous times throughout my life from individuals and organizations,” says Tracy Ferguson, Senior Paralegal. “Whenever there's an opportunity to give back to those in need, I believe we should do what we can, whether it be spending money or giving your time. Having the support of the company through Cenovus Cares is icing on the cake, making our impact go even further.”

Thank you to this incredible team and staff at Cenovus for their on-going contributions, helping to make a difference, together.
